Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators of Alabama

The AMTEA held its fall meeting during Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ACTM) Fall Forum on November 3, 2023 in Pelham, Alabama.

The AMTEA Spring Meeting was held AMTEA Spring Meeting, May 22, 2023, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., in Pelham, AL.

The AMTEA Business Meeting was held at Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ACTM) annual conference in November 2019. Minutes can be found here.

AMTEA members participated in a pre-session at the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ACTM) annual conference in November 2016. During the pre-session, members discussed important issues (edTPA and the elementary mathematics specialist certification). A majority of time was spent discussing and compiling feedback for the Standards for Preparing Mathematics Teacher Educators. To follow up, AMTEA held a video conference on Monday, Feb. 27 to discuss issues related to the State Math Panel, things learned from the annual meeting of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators Conference, and findings about AMTEA survey administered in February. Notes from the meeting are posted at this link.

AMTEA members participated in a pre-session at the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ACTM) annual conference in October 2015. During the pre-session, members discussed important issues (edTPA, Praxis, Alabama Mathematics, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) collaboration and certification for teacher candidates, and the elementary mathematics specialist certification) and brainstormed the role of AMTEA with these issues.

AMTEA also held its annual board meeting at the close of the ACTM conference. The following positions were filled: Dr. Megan Burton (president elect), Dr. Kyolo Johns (member at large), and Dr. Diane Porter (secretary). These members will join the existing leadership team: Dr. Stefanie Livers (president), Dr. Tommy Smith (immediate past president), Drs. Justin Boyle and Shelia Ingram (members at large), Dr. Jeremy Zelkowski (treasurer), and Dr. Gary Martin (webmaster). AMTEA plans to hold a special meeting in the spring that will include an edTPA expert related to mathematics education.

The AMTEA will hold a Business meeting of Friday October 24, at about 2:45, as part of the ACTM Fall Forum. This year’s conference is being held at the McWane Science Center in Birmingham on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 23rd, through Friday the 24th. The AMTEA is an organization of persons interested in the preparation of mathematics teachers for K-12 and mathematics education in general. AMTEA will hold a pre-session meeting prior to the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ACTM) state meeting on Thursday morning, October 31, 2013 from 10am to noon.

On the agenda for this presession:

1. Elementary Mathematics Specialist advanced degree programs & certification
2. AMSTI certification for preservice secondary (6-12) mathematics teachers
3. Mathematics Education Teacher – Partnership, update
4. Mathematics content coursework for secondary preservice programs statewide

AMTEA will hold its business meeting on Friday afternoon, November 1, 2013, presided by president-elect Tommy Smith. The group will set an agenda for 2014.

At its annual meeting on November 2, 2012, AMTEA elected the following new officers/directors:

• Member-at-Large – Tod Beers, State Department of Education, AMSTI, 2012-2014
• Member-at-Large – Megan Burton, Auburn University, 2012-2014
• Member-at-Large – Calli Holoway, University of Alabama, 2012-2014
